We - our industry, institutional research and communication - are responsible for two billion passenger kilometres of air travel, each year, according to estimates. All those conferences, analyst days, investor days, non-deal road shows and site visits add up to a lot of time out of the office, a lot of nights away from family, a lot of time in hotel rooms. And a lot of jet lag. All of this translates to higher costs and lower returns for fund investors.

And that's before we consider the impact of our carbon emissions.

We fly these distances to exchange information.

We started when there was no better way to communicate facts, figures, words, and body language. But the world - and technology - has moved on.

Why haven't We?

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) represents the interests of some of the world's largest institutional investors. ABI is a corporate member and supports the principles of ClimateWise, key amongst which are:

• Reduce the environmental impact of our business.
• Encourage our suppliers to improve the sustainability of their products and services.
• Measure and seek to reduce the environmental impact of the internal operations and physical assets under our control.
• Disclose our direct emissions of greenhouse gases using a globally recognised standard.
